A professor at the University of Padua at the age of twenty-five, Simone Stratico (1733-1824) was a renowned mathematician and physicist who also took an interest in shipping. In 1776 he published his Théorie sur la construction et la manœuvre des bâtiments, in 1813-1814 his Vocabulaire de marine in three languages and, a tireless worker, in 1823, the year before his death at the age of ninety, a Bibliographie de marine dans les diverses langues européennes, nomenclature des ouvrages de marine de 1484 à 1822.

In terms of its structure and richness, the Vocabolario di marina in tre lingue is comparable to William Falconer's Universal Dictionary of Marine, 1764, an expanded edition by William Burney in 1815, and Bonnefoux and Pâris's Dictionnaire de la marine à voile, 1856.

It is an encyclopaedic dictionary which, in addition to its translation into French and English, gives the definition of each term and the various uses to which it is put. It covers all aspects of the golden age of sailing: navigation, warships, merchant ships and small ships in the Mediterranean basin.

ANCRE's republication of the first volume, in Italian into French and English, of this hard-to-find work is aimed at its traditional clientele of researchers, historians and model-makers, but will also be a valuable aid for literary translators unfamiliar with marine vocabulary.
