Monographie Navicello -1911

The navicello was a typical boat of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and of Tuscany in particular, since the 16th century. It was used for the transport of a variety of merchandise on the river Arno and the sea. It was a small boat with a nearly flat bottom, 16-20 metres long, with less than 50 tons capacity. It
had one or two masts as well as a mast that was unique to the type, adding to the interest of this model. The Coursier, the subject of this monograph and true to type, benefited from technical advances such as its loading winch, or resulting from regulations which included the use of navigation lights (international regulations of 1862).

The navicello was adapted as much for river use as for the sea. This latter characteristic and its load capacity made the boat ideal for the transport of blocks of marble from Carrare.
The present monograph is dedicated to the navicello Le Coursier, built in the naval dockyards of Terrizano as well as to those elegant sailing ships launched from the shipyards of Oneglia and Porto Maurizio from 1884 for forty years. Sailing the Mediterranean and the oceans, they will be admired everywhere for the quality of their construction, their strength, their speed and the harmony of their lines.
