DUHAMEL du MONCEAU 1769
628 pages and 13-plate appendix.
This is the second edition, in which we added the subject of tarred ropes. By M. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, of the “Académie Royal des sciences” (Royal Academy of Science), and inspector-general of the Navy.
Illustrations include 14 chapter head-vignettes drawn and engraved by Soubeyron and 7 folding plates as published in 1747. We also included a new part on tarred ropes; complemented with 6 new plates drawn and engraved by La Gardette.
Rigging is an essential part of the ship. Up until the work by Duhamel du Monceau, we pretended that Swedish hemp was the best, but importing it was very expensive for the navy. Working with the best master rope-makers in Rochefort, Duhamel demonstrates that French hemp is basically equivalent but it needs to be better spun. Duhamel completes his treatise with a study on tar to better protect the standing rigging.
