The schooner is a type of vessel fitted with a distinctive rigging.

To this day, except for the monograph of the Jacynthe from Jean Boudriot, very few books have been the subject of this type of vessel. While his work is destined to be used for a closed hull traditional construction, the monograph dedicated to the Mutine is very detailed, containing all the structural plans needed to take on building a dockyard style, framed construction scale model. While the scale used is 1:36, the model is of modest size.

The use of schooners within the military navy only became widespread during the 19th century. Despite not being destined to serve in combat, these schooners took part in the 1823 Spanish Expedition prior to being used as stationary vessels in the Antilles. There, their purpose was coastal surveillance and the fight against contraband. Their weak artillery, 2 carronades, a few swivel-guns and blunderbusses, was sufficient to intercept vessels involved in the slave trade and to enforce the declaration from the Vienna Treaty, 1815, through which European powers were committed to abolish the trade.. This would only have a real effect during the 1830’s.

The technical aspect of the construction of these vessels from the Restauration Period is referenced through the Mutine, a schooner built in 1824 according to the 1823 standard design by builder Delamorinière .

Construction and fitting-out the vessel are detailed through numerous plans and illustrated by photos of the model built by the author.

The present book will also be valuable to modelers new to dockyard style work, while enabling them to build an attractive model of a type of vessel fairly uncommon in the French military navy, but quite popular in recreational boating during the 19th century; a type of vessel that never disappeared.
