THE MANUEL DU GABIER was published by order of the Minister of Navy and the Colonies, to enforce both the May 11, 1866 decree and the November 30, 1866 rules. Both organized the training and teaching of qualified topmen.

A useful book, it was conceived to help the sailors pass their topman certificate tests.
This handbook is abundantly illustrated (each paragraph includes a very clear figure) and has no theorical ambition. It deals quite simply with knots and tackles; splices ; seizing, sail manoeuvring and rigging setting.
In addition, instructions are given on damages to rigging and how to repair them. An appendix deals with double topsails, a very recent invention at that time.
All sailors on State ships and large sailing ships, and all registered sailors used the MANUEL DU GABIER.
Intended for all amateurs of the navy and large sailing ships, and of course for all ship's model builders, his reprint must have its place on the shelves of all naval libraries.
